Cafe Rouge, Cheltenham – Review by Hungry Owl
On April 13, 2017 by HungryOwlWe have eaten here a numbers of times over the last year and in my opinion it is the best of the chain store eateries in Cheltenham. The food is always well cooked and looks pretty on the plate.
This time I had Confit de Canard (Duck) with Cherry sauce, green beans and fries (yes I changed the potato dish from what was on the menu and it wasn’t a problem) and FattyCat (never the adventurous) had a burger with bacon and cheese with fries. FattyCat is not a fan of tomatoes and had three massive slices on his burger – it’s not a problem they are always ‘donated’ to me. The burger was clearly a success as he had told me a number of times today that it was an excellent burger!! The duck was crisp on the outside and juicy meat, the cherry sauce was deeply flavoured, beans cooked perfectly with just a little bit is crunch and fries well are fries.
For dessert I had a small, but very delicious Eton Mess (not very French) with a massive dessert spoon, that clearly was too big for the dish. Finally I had an Espresso.
The house red was not very nice – it was sharp and acrid. Next time I will suggest a few pounds more and pick something better.
My criticism. Yes I know we arrived at the restaurant at 8:30pm without a booking, but it wasn’t as if they were busy. The front seating area was completely empty and we were shown to a table in the rear seating area – there was probably 5 or 6 tables with people – so not busy. Our waitress seemed to be in a great rush to get us in and out. Before I had finished dabbing my mouth with my napkin she was over taking away my dinner plate. After dessert I literally put down my spoon and she was over with bill.
To give you an idea a 2 course meal with coffee in and out in less than 90 mins – not exactly a relaxed romantic
