Worcester
Ounce in Worcester has been open for quite a few years now and has earned itself a very good reputation. Finally, FattyCat and I decided to treat ourselves to a date night there.
The décor is very rustic and there is lots of plastic greenery everywhere. The tables in the upstairs dining room are very close together — there is no way you could have a private conversation.
I ordered a glass of Zinfandel, which cost more than I usually pay for an entire bottle at the supermarket, and I have to say it wasn’t anything special.
Starters – Focaccia with Bone Marrow Jus and a Caramelised Truffle Mushroom Tartlet. The bread was as light as a cloud, and while FattyCat liked the jus, I found it overly salty. The base of the tartlet was a burnt, black 1 mm crisp topped with cold mushrooms and melted Stilton. The ingredients could have made a wonderful dish — a proper pastry case with hot garlicky mushrooms and melted, tangy Stilton — but this burnt, cold version was not very nice, and at £11 it felt expensive.
Mains – Fillet steak with fries and salad. The steak was cooked perfectly to a medium rare, as requested, and had been well rested. The price did seem steep at £35 for an 8oz steak.
I ordered the crab risotto (£21): overcooked rice that looked more like porridge, with chilli and crab. I knew something wasn’t right with it — the consistency and colour of the rice were wrong. By 3 a.m. I was paying the price for the risotto and was locked in the bathroom at home.
Overall, I wasn’t impressed with the food or the prices. The staff were very young and appeared to have been either badly trained or not trained at all. Service was slow throughout, and then at 8:45, when they served us coffee, they seemed keen for us to leave, as they brought the bill with the coffees without us asking.
