Hickory’s Smokehouse, Worcester – Review by HungryOwl
On June 23, 2019 by HungryOwlSaturday evenings at Hickory’s is busy – you will need to book if you want a table to eat. But you can always just chill and have a drink in the bar or on veranda.
This evening we were sat on a comfy table for two near the pass – which on a busy service is a noisy place to be seated.
As you are seated you are given a paper bag of salted popcorn to go with your drinks. Thus stimulating your taste buds whilst you peruse the menu. The service here is always friendly and the guys are helpful to explain any of the items on the menu.
After being defeated at Christmas by the sharing board, this time we ordered our own main courses and a bottle of red wine.
To start we had a single portion of Corn Dogs to share, as I had never had one before I wasn’t sure what to expect. They were crispy on the outside with a bacon crumb and inside soft hot dog style sausages. It was an interesting combination of flavours and even now rethinking the dish – I’m not of my opinion of Corn Dogs. FattyCat had tried these before in the USA and he said these were better than what he had had there – so there’s a thumbs up from someone in the know.
In our typical way we order totally different steaks and fries from each other.
My steak was a medium cooked Sirlion with a peppercorn sauce and french fries – with a perfectly crispy onion ring. The peppercorn sauce is not my thing and was kindly donated to FattyCat to enjoy. Whilst I had ketchup (Heinz) and mayo (Heinz) with mine.
I have discovered one thing that I don’t like Heinz Mayo – it’s very sweet!
It was a perfectly cooked meal.
FattyCat had a medium/rare rump steak with chilli cheese chips, an onion ring with the peppercorn sauce.
Again perfectly cooked and it had been rested – so there was no red liquid escaping the steak when he cut into it.
Both steaks were melt in the mouth.
Dessert was so amazing that we tucked in and scoffed the lot before we released that we hadn’t taken any photos (#facepalm) we both had the waffles which were described as “crisp, light, homemade waffle topped with soft scoop vanilla ice cream & finished with a drizzle of golden maple syrup.” Oh my! there were so light and fluffy with a crisp outer – just a dream.
Twice we have now been Hickory’s (see our post from Dec 2018) and both times we have had excellent service, great food and a fabulous bottle of wine.
