Island Greek Restaurant, Worcester – Review by HungryOwl
On January 7, 2023 by HungryOwlIt’s easy to go to restaurants that you have been to before and had a good meal there already. We have decided that this year we will try the restauarants that we haven’t eaten at before. It’s January and we are starting our year off by keeping to this resolution. We have seen so many reviews for Island a small Greek taverna on the Deansway in Worcester.
I booked 2 weeks in advance and was told that they were very busy that evening and could only offer me 6:15pm or 8:45pm. We took the earlier booking and to be honest we were very surprised when we walked into the taverna to see all but 1 table was already fully occupied. The atmosphere was jovial and the diners were a wide range of ages from some small very well behaved children to some octogenarians. We joked with the waitress that we could guess which was our table as she guided us though the dining room.
Except when I was on holiday in Corfu 15 years ago I have eaten Greek food, so I don’t know how authentic the menu is. Whilst perusing the menu I was watching plate after plate coming from the kitchen – everything looked so yummy.
FattyCat has a seafood intollerance, so part of the menu was out of bounds for him. We decided to order the Meat sharing plate for 2. This was chicken breast, 2 lamb chops, 1 small steak, 1 pork loin, 2 beef and lamb kebabs, 2 sausages; served with chips, green salad and white dip. Everything was cooked just right charcoled on the outer with the lamb and beeg still a little pink on the inner. So very tasty.
For dessert we shared a slice of Portokalopita – with a soft, moist yogurt cake which is covered with a orange sauce and a drizzle of chocolate sauce.
To finish the meal we had a Greek Coffee – very much like an espresso. The flavours were deep and smooth with a hint of dark chocolate and hazlenuts……but only drink three quarters of the tiny cup because there is a whole load of coffee residue in the bottom.
Service was relaxed and friendly – the owner Alessandro is an adorable character and very much suited to his role.
We can’t wait to return.
