The Alchemist, Brindley Place, Birmingham – review by HungryOwl
On July 5, 2023 by HungryOwlWe were going to a concert at the NIA, or whatever name is it is currently going by. So, to make sure we could park we arrived in town early. I had already booked a table at The Alchemist in Brindley Place. We have been to a fair few of the eateries in Brindley Place and it’s always nice to try somewhere new.
The Alchemist is upstairs above Las Iguanas. I’m not sure if there is another entrance which is accessible for people who are less able, but I would say the steps that we went up were very steep. The decor was modern and quirky, the staff were welcoming and friendly. A really good start.
The menu was weird mix of oriental food and traditional pub food. I ordered Chicken in a Basket and FattyCat ordered the burger with extra bacon.
The chicken was served in a wire basket – the sort that you might store eggs in at home. It was shaped to make it difficult to get to the food. There was no way to cut the chicken pieces as the bottom of the basket was also wired. I decided to transfer the food from the basket to the 2 unused side plates that had been left on the table. The oil that had been used to cook both the chips and the chicken wasn’t fresh and had left the food tasting burnt. The chicken was the perfect colour on the outside, but it was way overcooked on the inside, which made it dry and tough. After eating one of the chicken strips I gave up. The chips despite being dipped in garlic mayo still tasted bad, so I also left these. (£15.50)
The burger was also overcooked and tasteless, Fatty Cat had also asked for Bacon to be added to the cheeseburger which cost £2 – when the burger arrived this equated to 1 slice of streaky bacon. (£14 burger, £2 bacon)
Totally disappointed with every part of the meals.
Drinks
Old Mout Cherries and Berries £6.25
Peroni Capri £5.25
We will not be returning and we will also be avoiding others in the chain.
